Google announced they are sunsetting the Google Analytics Universal Analytics on July 1, 2023. Users should set up Google Analytics 4 properties now to ensure data collection.

This also means that historical data for Universal Analytics may not be accessible after the July 2023 date.

Now is the time to create a Google Analytics 4 property, if you haven’t already done so.

Universal Analytics 360 properties will also stop processing hits on October 1, 2023.

Fortunately, you can use your existing Google Universal Analytics tags to create a new GA4 property that will run in parallel to your UA tags, provided they are using Google Tag Manager tracking code. Older UA tags that use the Google Analytics Object will have to be converted to the current GTM tracking code first. Then that tag can be used to create a GA4 property using the existing tags, without losing any Universal Analytics data.

In the video below, we look at what this change means, and how to set up a Google Analytics 4 property using your existing Universal Analytics tags.

How to Set Up a Google Analytics 4 Property from an Existing Google Universal Analytics Property

1. Log in to Google Analytics.

2. Go to the Universal Analytics property where you are creating a GA 4 property.

3. On desktop, go to the bottom left of the navigation and click Admin. The icon will be a gear wheel.

4. In the middle column, under Property, click GA4 Setup Assistant.

5. If you do not have a connected GA4 property, you will see a message that says, “I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property”. Click the button that says Get Started.

6. A popup will appear that should enable you to create a GA4 property. Check the box labelled, “Enable data collection using your existing tags”. Click the button that says, “Create Property”.

7. If a message appears that says you are not eligible to create a GA4 property using existing UA tags, you are likely using the older tracking code that uses the Google Analytics Object. Go to Property > Tracking Info > Tracking Code and install that on your website. You should be able to complete the setup using existing tags after installing the new tracking code.
